About Naxos
Naxos is the largest and greenest island in
the Cyclades, with impressively high mountains
and fertile green valleys. It is an island
of beautiful old churches, monasteries, Venetian
buildings, golden beaches and the bluest of
seas. In some of the villages they still wear
traditional dress, weave on old looms and
live off the fruit of the land
There are not many islands
where their most famous archaeological site
is the first thing you see when you arrive
by ferry. This is the Portara, the doorway
to the ancient Temple to Apollo which was
built in 522 BC and never finished, it sits
on a little island in the harbor and is connected
by a small causeway. The harbour is a very
lively area with many cafes and restaurants.
Naxos is big so renting a car, motorbike or
bicycle is a good idea if you plan to explore
the island, although it does boast of a good
bus system.
During the summer there
are normally two or three ferries daily from
Piraeus to Naxos, there are daily connections
to Paros, Santorini, Mykonos, Ios and Tinos
during the summer by ferry or hydrofoil. There
are also daily excursion boats to Santorini,
Mykonos and Delos. The local airport in Naxos
can be reached by local bus or taxi.
Naxos Island, the largest
and most fertile island in Cyclades, is probably
one of the most attractive and beautiful of
the Greek Islands. It combines golden sands
with the mountain beauty. Large enough to
be explored, Naxos promises you unforgettable
holidays.
Over 40 kilometres of
beaches, over 40 traditional villages, 500
churches, monuments, archaeological sites,
beautiful drive on the mountains, fertile
valleys make Naxos Island one of the best
holiday destinations in Greece.
